Beyond the label

It’s our mission to bring you quality, great-value wines from the world’s under-the-radar wine regions. And we’re thrilled to introduce 14/27 Xinomavro—a classic red wine from Greece that’s carefully handcrafted and absolutely delicious.

Renowned winemaker Pavlos Argyropoulos once worked for Greece’s famous Tsantali winery. In recent years, he’s struck out on his own and founded Symposium Cellars, with the goal of showcasing fine wines made from Xinomavro (one of Greece’s top red grape varieties) grown in the Amyndeon region. Located just 20 miles from the famous Naoussa region (home to some of the country’s most expensive wines), Amyndeon remains something of an insider’s secret, so the wines still offer incredible value.

Pavlos and his team sourced the Xinomavro grapes from very special vineyards. These sites pre-date Phylloxera (the vineyard louse that notoriously killed many of Europe’s vines) and are planted at 2,400 feet above sea level, giving the fruit plenty of sunshine to ripen and coolness to stay fresh. After hand harvesting the grapes, Pavlos allowed their juice to “cold soak,” which extracts greater color and flavor. Then, he aged the wine for five months in French oak barrels, followed by a further one year of aging in bottle before release.

After tasting the wine’s vibrant, velvety berry flavors, Pavlos knew it would be a real crowd pleaser. So, he named it 14/27 after the Ancient Greek tradition of symposiums (which translates to “drinking together”). Held after large feasts, these events brought together 14 to 27 people to debate, drink and dance. And speaking of crowd pleasing, judges at the Thessaloniki Wine Competition certainly loved 14/27, awarding it a silver medal.

Secure your share of this exciting Greek red today then enjoy at your own symposium (with as many friends as you’d like!).
