Flavor Profile
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the Southern Rhône’s most prized red, and quality in recent years has been astounding. Decanter critic Matt Walls was impressed with the 2020 vintage, writing “the best terroirs really shined, producing athletic, elegant wines of intensity and panache.”
There’s no better taste for fans than Château Sixtine, the legendary Diffonty family’s powerful flagship release. In the past, it’s been awarded a higher score than iconic Château de Beaucastel (for many, the finest Châteauneuf of all), rated #2 (out of over 150 wines) at the annual competition in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and won multiple 90+ point scores and gold medals. Here’s critic Jeb Dunnuck on the previous release, which he scored 94+ points:
“Full-bodied, rich and mouth-filling, with building tannins, it has a meaty, powerful nose of dark fruits, ground pepper, subtle smoke and cured meats” and will “cruise for 15 years or so in cold cellars.”
And the just-launched 2020 edition is every bit as lovely. A classic Châteauneuf blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, Château Sixtine is made in extremely small quantities at the Diffonty’s boutique estate. While it’s already delicious now (especially with traditional pairings like roasted lamb or ratatouille), don’t be afraid to stash a few bottles away for the coming years. Secure your share today.
