Flavor Profile
The premium Priorat region produces some of the finest wines in Spain, if not the world. But, given the extreme terrain, few winemakers dare to take on the challenge of growing grapes here. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce you to the Ametller family and Clos del Mill, their organically grown red, which showcases all that extraordinary Priorat has to offer.
Grapes have grown in Priorat since Roman times, but by the 1970s, the region was mostly abandoned. The Ametllers have owned vineyards here since 1847, and were part of a rebirth in the 1990s, recovering their property and restoring the vines.
No easy feat when you consider Priorat’s notoriously difficult landscape. Steep slopes and terraced vineyards mean everything is done by hand (no machines can fit), with trusty donkeys carrying precious grapes down to the cellar. The llicorella soil is composed of rough slate (named for its “licorice” hue), and while it produces very few grapes, the quality is off the charts.
Here’s eighth-generation proprietor, Joan Amettler, on what you can expect in the glass:
“Our Clos del Mill is crafted from 100% organic grapes, mainly Grenache and Carignan (local natives), plus Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Full bodied, yet elegant and structured, it offers black fruit and wild red berry notes with subtle hints of spice. Perfectly balanced and one of a kind. Salut!”
