Beyond the label

Ambitious, quality-driven Paolo Masi is definitely at the top of his game, with plaudits from major critics like Robert Parker, Wine Spectator and Italy’s leading wine guide Gambero Rosso, where his handcrafted wines have been praised for their “irreproachably clean fruit and abundant personality.”

Thanks to a 20-plus-year relationship with his family’s small estate, you enjoy special access to his small-batch ‘Super Tuscan,’ a rich style that blends Tuscany’s native Sangiovese with international Cabernet Sauvignon. Acclaimed wine writer Natalie MacLean once referred to it as “lip-smacking delicious. Such an amazing wine for the money.” And you’ve got first crack at the new release.

The cuvée name, Verso Cielo, is a reference to Paolo’s special vineyards, planted “facing skyward” in the hills of the premium Chianti sub-zone of Rufina. This ideal exposure helps grapes soak up lots of sun, yielding fuller, more robust flavors in the glass. A generous, 14-month slumber in fine oak adds even greater complexity. Look for deep aromas and flavors of raisin and blackberry, plus notes of black currant, strawberry, freshly brewed coffee and toasty oak.

Paolo makes limited barrels of this special red—early orders are highly recommended.
