Beyond the label

Super Tuscan wines represent the creativity and passion of Tuscan winemakers. To make this incredibly popular wine style, they break the local rules—blending native Italian grapes like Sangiovese with international varieties. The result, as you’ll taste with this 91-point example, are wines of serious quality.

Le Prode hails from the Nuti family’s prized “La Regola” property, which they’ve tended since the early 1900s. This small plot of land lies just five kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea, providing the vineyards with an ideal Mediterranean climate. The area is also home to some of the most esteemed Super Tuscan wines—including $250+ a bottle Sassicaia, which is made just down the road from the Nuti family estate.

Compared to its famous neighbor, Le Prode offers incredible value. The Nuti family’s vineyard team hand harvested the Sangiovese, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. In the winery, the team hand selects the bunches, ensuring only the best grapes make it into the wine. As the finishing touch, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barriques.

Given all this care and attention, it should come as no surprise that critic James Suckling rated Le Prode 91 points. He wrote, “Aromas of dark olives, coffee and blackberries are echoed on the palate, with smoothly packed tannins. Juicy and full-bodied with a concise finish, showing some dark cherries at the end.”
