The Barbanera family’s flagship is “one of the all-time great Super Tuscan reds,” says critic Luca Maroni. Crafted in a similar style, Saracosa is a far more affordable Super Tuscan that offers layers of luscious berry flavor.

Beyond the label

From the Barbanera family estate (that’s the Barbaneras below), overlooked by the Saracosa hill near Montalcino, Saracosa is a rich blend of Sangiovese and Merlot that offers dark berry and vanilla flavors.

A perenial bestseller, it was inspired by the Super Tuscan style—a mix of Italy’s native grape varieties and international stars—developed by the renowned Piero Antinori in the 1970s. The category kickstarted the region’s renaissance and was once one of the most popular styles worlwide.

Half of the Barbanera's vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, while the remainder sit just beyond. The family has worked this land since the early 1940s, which means most of their holdings are now old vines that deliver exceptional concentration.

Their flagship Vecciano cuvée has been hailed by Italian critic Luca Maroni as “one of the all-time great Super Tuscan reds”—and Saracosa is an exclusive (far more affordable) release crafted just for our customers.

An impressive and dense wine, it offers rounded berry flavors and spice tones accented by vanilla, all hemmed in by fine tannins. Winemaker Sofia Barbanera recommends pairing it with local delicacies like pasta with boar rugu or grilled lamb, but we think it'd be delicious with any more robust meatdish you plan to serve.
